Spousal Employment

As the spouse of someone posted to Brunei you should assume that you will not be able to find/take paid employment. Your status, indicated by a stamp in your passport, is as a 'Dependent'. While there are a lot of foreign workers here, Brunei does have a growing unemployment problem and so local citizens are given priority when it comes to jobs.

You may be lucky and find yourself in the right place in the right time with the right skills to land a great job - some do - 99.99% don't . Most likely to get jobs are teachers and medics (doctors/nurses etc), but again MOST DO NOT.

There are a few part-time jobs around, for example, Teaching English as a Foreign language. Appropriately qualified individuals (eg CELTA) may be able to find some work teaching evening classes etc. Note that this is not in local schools. School teachers must all have full teaching qualifications.

Going into business - Some spouses have set up their 'own' businesses in Brunei. Please note that there are strict laws governing this and that you will need to find a local partner who will be part owner, before you can do anything. Some do run little private 'cottage' businesses from home but this isn't legal and you run the risk of getting into trouble over it.

That is not to say that spouses lead boring unproductive lives in Brunei - this website comes to you courtesy of an 'unemployed' spouse. There are a huge number of activities to get involved with and your time here will be whatever you make of it..
